Car Free a to z compares all transportation options including driving, walking, biking, Capital Bikeshare, bus, rail and carpooling. It also compares trips that combine more than one option like biking to the Metro or walking to the bus. In order to choose the best transportation option, shows users estimated travel time, trip costs (including transit fares and parking), calories burned, and productive time (time available for reading or working) as well as CO2 emissions reduced.

The Challenge

To help Arlington County Commuter Services (ACCS) increase the number of registered users for a new regional online trip planner called The website and its mobile device counterpart allow users to find all the transportation options anywhere in the Greater Washington area.

The Idea

To schedule the outreach team at high-traffic locations and events throughout Arlington County including Metro stations, libraries, community centers, shopping areas and universities to register people for the trip planner on site. By speaking with people face to face, we can learn more about their current transportation usage, answer their questions and be sure that they actually register for the website.

  • 200% increase in accounts

  • Outreach team deployed to 17 events

The Solution

We introduced to residents, commuters, and visitors to Arlington through face-to-face interactions and explained the benefits of registering for the website which include:

  • Saving favorite or frequently used locations such as home and work addresses

  • Receiving updates about new features or Arlington transportation

The outreach teams we deployed also walked through the registration and account set up process with those they spoke with. By doing so, they ensured a person’s information was captured on the spot, instead of relying on the person doing so after the interactions.

The outreach marketing team has recently been present at some locations along the Columbia Pike corridor to talk to Arlington residents about this new online trip planner. We really appreciate having the team take the time to educate people about all their transportation options to get to any location in the area. It’s important for people to consider other forms of transportation besides just getting in their car to drive everywhere. We look forward to helping become the website and app of choice for those traveling to and around Arlington County.
